Virtual Bauhaus

Statement

Virtual Bauhaus offers visitors a one-of-a-kind experience, transporting them into the architectural space of the iconic Bauhaus Dessau building, which was constructed in 1925–26 according to designs by the school’s first director, Walter Gropius, as it existed in the 1920s. Through this immersive environment, visitors explore the school’s central ideas through encounters with its architectural interior. Construct a material study in the workshop room – Explore the dormitories where students lived and worked – Engage with an experimental performance in the stage workshop – Ascend the building’s iconic staircase which played host to photo-ops, drawing courses, and the school’s infamous parties. The exhibition’s goal is not only to provide visitors worldwide a chance to experience the Bauhaus first-hand but also to convey through a contemporary medium the lasting relevance of one of Germany’s most important cultural legacies. Virtual Bauhaus was created by the Goethe-Institut Boston in collaboration with Cologne Game Lab, TH Köln. Presented in North America as part of Wunderbar Together: The Year of German-American Friendship 2018/19 – an initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI). More information at www.wunderbartogether.org. Presented as part of a series of programs by the Getty Research Institute, the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles, A+D Museum, and WUHO Woodbury University Hollywood Outpost that will unravel at multiple venues over the course of the year. “Bauhaus at the Getty” includes the exhibition Bauhaus Beginnings, the film series Bauhaus on Screen, and the digital project Bauhaus: Building the New Artist. The Goethe-Institut Los Angeles will present the interactive exhibition Virtual Bauhaus at A+D Museum and the photography exhibition bauhaus.photo at the WUHO Gallery. Both Virtual Bauhaus and bauhaus.photo are presented as part of Wunderbar Together: The Year of German-American Friendship 2018/19—an initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the federation of German Industries (BDI).
