EAMES DESIGNS:THE GUEST HOST RELATIONSHIP
Charles and Ray Eames inspired us to appreciate the world by honoring “the uncommon beauty of common things.”
This exhibit uses Eames words to focus on the lesser-known aspects of their lives, revealing their appreciation of the value of humble objects and useful tools. Their insights about the simple pleasures of daily life will be illustrated with objects and materials available during their lifetimes and contemporary examples from the world around us.
From tumbleweed to strawberries, a bolt of cloth to a keg of nails, to elephants in India and the bread of Scandinavia, the whole world was their canvas.
The technologies they used (and often invented) to record their appreciation, were the most advanced of their time.
The informal “assemblage” will show an aspect of Charles and Ray’s lives, which enchanted everyone lucky enough to know them and which, during Pacific Standard Time, will be available to all.
Eames Designs: The Guest Host Relationship is a part of the city-wide Pacific Standard Time initiative. Pacific Standard Time is an unprecedented collaboration of more than sixty cultural institutions across Southern California, coming together to tell the story of the birth of the L.A. art scene. Initiated through grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time will take place for six months beginning October 2011.
Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty. The presenting sponsor is Bank of America.
