Nancy Harkness is a Partner in the firm of Weissmann Wolff Bergman Coleman Grodin & Evall LLP and an entertainment, media and sports attorney, focusing on the areas of business development, strategy, business affairs and operations, with an emphasis on the convergence of new media and new technologies with traditional entertainment and media.  Ms. Harkness’ clients have included such companies as Universal Music Group, TWI, Primedia Television & Digital Video, T-Mobile International, Jimmy and Doug’s Farmclub.com, Atari and Napster.  Her expertise encompasses the formulation of entertainment and sports industry strategies and the identification of acquisition targets for media, advertising, marketing and private equity firms.  She pursues brand development opportunities through such strategic marketing initiatives as the production of advertiser branded and financed entertainment content, corporate sponsorships, product integration and merchandising programs.  Ms. Harkness also formulates digital content distribution, programming and protection strategies for entertainment and media companies in such areas as wireless entertainment, video-on-demand, video games, on-line advertising and digital cinema.  Her experience extends to the start-up, launch, operation and restructuring of media and new technology ventures, including the rendering of interim executive management services, and the development of digital rights management, privacy, trade secret protection and public policy strategies.

Previously, Ms. Harkness headed the Business and Legal Affairs Department of Universal Studios’ Consumer Products Group and Motown Record Company, L.P.  In those positions, as well as for entertainment and sports clients, she negotiated major corporate asset and intellectual property rights acquisitions.  She developed strategic marketing initiatives, such as corporate sponsorships, promotional tie-ins, product placement, merchandising, advertising and licensing programs for music, film, television, video games, new media and sports.  

Ms. Harkness received her B.A. in Economics from Cornell University in 1980 and her J.D. from Fordham University in 1985.  She served on the Legal and New Technology Committees of the Recording Industry Association of America and is a former member of the International Association of Assembly Managers.  Admitted to practice in California and New York, Ms. Harkness is a member of the Intellectual Property, Entertainment and Sports Law Sections of the State Bar of California, the American Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association.
