Museum History

The A+D Museum opened its doors in January 2001 in the Bradbury Building, one of downtown Los Angeles’ premiere landmark buildings.

The A+D Museum was established in response to the need for a space that would be devoted expressly to the exhibition of architecture and design in Los Angeles.

Due to the generosity of Ira Yellin, a civic leader of great distinction with a passion for architecture, the A+D Museum was initially given a prominent space in Ira Yellin’s much beloved Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles.

The museum programs and exhibitions have been a great success from the start, fulfilling its mission of showcasing innovative architecture and design in one of America’s most important architectural cities. The need for such a showcase has been clearly illustrated by the sold-out crowds of appreciative audiences at each event. At Ira Yellin’s untimely passing, the Bradbury Building was sold and the A+D Museum was required to move.

The interim move to West Hollywood afforded the Museum prominent street presence in an area of the City with considerable pedestrian traffic and increased visibility. After a year and a half on Sunset Strip, it is now essential for the continued growth of the museum that it be established in a stable location

The A+D is the only museum in Los Angeles where continuous exhibits of architecture and design is on view. Through exhibits, lectures and book signings, the A+D serves as a showcase to the community for the work of important regional, national and international designers, providing a forum for contemporary issues in architecture, urbanism, and design that are helping to shape the city.

The A+D Photography Gallery has a continuously changing exhibit of architectural photography for purchase. All photography is signed by such notable photographers as Marvin Rand and Julius Shulman.
