The Modern and The Contemporary presented an occasion to sample mid-century modern architecture and consider its influence on contemporary architecture on the West Coast of the United States and Canada.

Five invited guest curators selected and introduced a pair of modern and contemporary houses by architects in five West Coast cities: Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. With the intent to ground a better understanding of the development of West Coast residential architecture, the West Coast Residential exhibition revealed connections between cities on the coast and juxtaposed modern and contemporary production, seeking to situate rather than isolate the modern within the contemporary moment.
