Nate Cormier

Principal Landscape Architect, Rios Clementi Hale Studios

Nate Cormier is a Principal Landscape Architect with Rios Clementi Hale Studios (RCH Studios). His interest in landscape design as a form of storytelling drew him to Los Angeles after two decades of practice in Seattle and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Harvard University. RCH Studios is a multi-disciplinary design house with an adventurous portfolio ranging from parks, theaters and adaptive reuse to tableware, surfboards and a new clothing line. Metropolis Magazine called the new RCH Studios monograph, Not Neutral: For Every Place Its Story, “pages and pages of pure LA.” Nate will share recent work, including downtown parks for Seattle, Los Angeles and Palm Springs. He will explore the role of storytelling in the collective design process and imagination as a catalyst for authentic urban life. Los Angeles offers a rich backdrop for this exploration. Alternately cast by speculators and boosters as an Arcadia (found paradise) or as a Utopia (made paradise), LA’s truth is often stranger than fiction. Despite its stubborn cultural clashes and apocalyptic environmental challenges, Nate finds optimism in LA’s inventiveness and hopes it can offer a model of resilience for megacities in an uncertain world.
