MEMORIAL DAY | ‘The Weight of Sacrifice’

As we approach Memorial Day, we think it is appropriate to highlight recent efforts in the United States to honor and commemorate those who have bravely served our country. This past January, the National WWI Memorial Competition finally picked its winning proposal for Washington D.C.’s, Pershing Park. Out of 350 entries, Joseph Weishaar’s (a 25-year-old Chicago architect) proposal, ‘The Weight of Sacrifice’ was selected.

EXPLORING DTLA | THE BRADBURY BUILDING

Throughout our short history, the A+D has never stayed in one place for long. Although we’ve happily settled into our new home at 900 E. 4th Street, we enjoy looking back at our past residences around the city. One space in particular continues to stand out, not only because it was our first location, but because it is one of Los Angeles’s most historically significant buildings.

CONVERSATIONS | DURFEE AND KOERNER

What will Los Angeles look like in ten years? With technology continuing to advance at a breakneck speed, the future of our city can hardly be visualized with any real certainty. What will be different? What will have remained the same? How will we dress? How will we be communicating? Artists Tim Durfee and Julia Koerner raise such questions as they focus in on the effects of technology on human interaction, fashion and design.

CONVERSATIONS | FRANCIS, PILDAS, FERAHI AND VERTEBRAE

It’s all happening here at the A+D!  After a busy (but successful!) first week’s run, ComeIn! DTLA has enraptured our minds and ignited our restless imaginations. The wide range of ideas and materials on display is proof that Downtown, Los Angeles is absolutely pregnant with creative stimuli.  That being said, it can be a bit overwhelming to take in the work of our eighteen featured artists in only one go! Therefore, we’re going to ease you in by dedicating this week’s blog post to Chris Francis, Behnaz Farahi, Vertebrae and Ave Pildas.

COME IN! DTLA | OPENING NIGHT RECEPTION

The long wait is finally over! Yesterday evening at the A+D, we hosted an opening reception to launch our hotly anticipated exhibition, ComeIn! DTLA. A perfectly balmy evening, the opening reception received an exceptionally large turnout! Many of our featured artists were present and generously gave visitors personal tours and explanations of their work. Among the many guests, we overheard snippets of stimulating conversation and spotted the occasional exchange of business cards. It is always such a pleasure to see the museum bring like-minded individuals together and be a space in which collaboration and discussion can flourish!
